Lesson 2
Elements and Principles
of Design

Welcome to lesson 2 on the Elements and Principles of Design! This lesson will cover the basic building blocks of art and design. The great thing about these building blocks is that they can apply to almost any area of visual design whether it's traditional art like drawing and painting, or creating a powerpoint or bulletin board layout for your classroom. This information will be great to keep in the back of your mind as you begin creating instructional design and assembling presentations. We will get into practical applications of these elements and principles in a later lesson, but for now, read the linked articles and watch the videos. At the end of the lesson you will get hands-on by creating your own powerpoint slide show demonstrating your understanding of the elements and principles of design.

READ
  • Download your printable handout of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design HERE.

  • This is actually a VIDEO, but it's a great introduction to "what is design" and what is not design. This video introduction can help you start thinking through things as a designer and creating things based on your audience and the needs of the project (a key consideration for every design!).

  • Read (or listen to) THIS article.

YOUR TURN

Now is your chance to DO something. Grab a PowerPoint (or Goggle Slides) theme and make at least 5 slides demonstrating your understanding of the Elements and Principles of Design. Use the checklist on the right to make sure you have everything included in your file. Email your finished presentation to your instructor.

CHECKLIST

  • See example slides below

  • Include a minimum of 5 slides

  • Choose any 5 elements or principles you would like to demonstrate. Only make one slide of each you choose (not 5 slides of one element)

  • Each slide must have include the title of the element or principle (so we know which one you are showing)

  • You can use existing PPT templates, the main idea is that you understand what you're looking for visually and why that template represents that element. Slidescarnival.com is a great resource for grabbing some free PPT templates!

  • Email your finished presentation to your instructor
